The Division of Letters is not a professional school. Every student belongs to it for at least a year. The required sequence is writing, the history of technology, and political economy. The college keeps the requirement because technical work depends on clear prose.
A smaller number of students major in history, literature, or political economy. They live in the same halls, row with the same crews, and take the same first-year mathematics, at the same slates, as their classmates. The division’s offices are in Founders Library, above the reading room, and its seminars end the way every class here begins: with someone at the board.
