Admissions

Undergraduate admission.

The college enrolls a small first-year class. There is no application fee.

South Hudson Institute of Technology enrolls undergraduates only. The committee reads the secondary-school record, preparation in mathematics through precalculus, and a writing sample. Standardized tests are optional. Students who submit scores most often fall between 1320 and 1480.

How to apply

  1. 1

Visit, or request a viewbook. Guided visits leave from the Terrace Gate on Saturday mornings in October and April. Use the form on this page to request a viewbook.

  2. 2

Choose a plan. Apply Early Decision if South Hudson Institute of Technology is your first choice. Apply Regular Decision if you want to compare offers. Transfer students apply for fall entry.

  3. 3

Send the application. We need your secondary-school record, a writing sample, one recommendation from a teacher of mathematics or science, and a recommendation from a counselor. Test scores are optional.

  4. 4

Apply for aid at the same time. Aid is based on need, so you need to submit the financial aid forms by the application deadline to get a decision on time.

  5. 5

Hear from us, then reply. Admitted students are invited to an admitted-students day on the terrace in April. Enrolling students report on Arrival Day in late August for Blank Week, which ends on Bell Night.

“We give tours in October and April because those are the months we can defend.”

Transfer students

The college admits a small number of transfer students each year, mostly into the second year. Students must have completed calculus and a laboratory science. Transfer students draw their houses on Bell Night with the first-year class.

Your first week

New students carrying trunks up a stone path from the boathouse, with older students walking beside them.
Arrival Day. The trunk goes up the Climb with its owner.

New students report on Arrival Day, a Saturday in late August. Families drive to North Dock. Each new student is given a key, a pocket field book, and a timetable, and then carries their own trunk up the Climb to the terrace, as the first class did in 1875. Families wait on the terrace, and second- and third-year students walk alongside but don’t carry.

Blank Week follows: six days of placement at the slates, a swim test, a walk of the terrace stations with the registrar, the first bench check, and the Particulars, the first four printed pages of the field book, which every new student learns by heart. The week ends on Bell Night, when each new student draws a house.

“Nobody tells you the trunk is the easy part. The easy part is over by the time you reach the terrace.”
