The terrace
Students recast the terrace bell
November 12, 2025
The School of Applied Science cast a replacement from the 1908 pattern. It now rings the hour.
The original bell cracked during a January freeze. Rather than order a replacement, the materials shop spent the fall making a new one. Students measured the old bell, cut the pattern, and poured the bronze behind Founders Library, using the alloy that had lasted out of doors since 1908.
The bell was returned to its yoke in October. It sounds slightly higher than its predecessor. Seniors noticed. First-year students took it as the ordinary sound of the terrace.
